What is Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of optimising your business so that AI assistants — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot — cite you as a source and recommend you in the answers they generate.
Why GEO matters now
Search behaviour is changing faster than at any point since Google launched. A growing share of searches never produce a click — the searcher reads the AI-generated answer and moves on. When someone asks an assistant "who's the best [service] in London?", they typically get a short, confident shortlist. If your business isn't in it, you're invisible at the exact moment of decision.
The brands that win these recommendations aren't always the ones ranking first on Google. They're the ones a language model can understand, trust and quote. Structuring your business to be that trusted, quotable source is what GEO does.
How GEO differs from SEO
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | Rank a page | Be cited in the answer |
| Success metric | Rankings & clicks | Share of AI answers / mentions |
| Key content | Keyword-targeted pages | Clear, answer-shaped, evidence-backed passages |
| Off-site signal | Backlinks | Citations in sources AI trusts |
| Typical speed | Weeks–months | Days–weeks |
What actually influences AI recommendations
- Clarity of facts. Models reward pages that state, unambiguously, who you are, what you do, where and for whom.
- Structured data. Schema markup helps a model extract and trust your details.
- Citable passages. Self-contained, well-sourced answers are easy for an AI to lift and attribute.
- Third-party corroboration. Being mentioned consistently across directories, reviews and reputable articles builds the "everyone agrees" signal models look for.
- Freshness and consistency. Up-to-date, non-contradictory information across the web keeps the model confident.
How to get started with GEO
Begin with a baseline: find out what the AIs currently say about you. From there, the work is structuring your site to be understood, seeding your brand into the sources models read, and tracking your share of answers over time. What does GEO stand for?
Generative Engine Optimisation — optimising your business to be cited and recommended inside AI-generated answers.
Is GEO the same as AEO or "answer engine optimisation"?
They're closely related terms for the same shift. GEO is the most widely used label for optimising toward generative AI assistants specifically.
Do I still need SEO if I do GEO?
Yes — they reinforce each other. Authoritative, well-structured content helps you rank and helps you get cited. GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
