How to get your business into ChatGPT
If your customers ask ChatGPT before they buy, being recommended by it is the new shelf position. You can't pay for it — but you can earn it. Here are the seven steps we use to get a business named and recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants.
1. Baseline what AI already says about you
Before changing anything, find out where you stand. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews the real questions your buyers ask — "best [service] in London", "[service] near me", "alternatives to [competitor]". Record whether you're mentioned, how you're described, and who's recommended instead. This is your starting line. (Our free AI-visibility audit does exactly this for you.)
2. State your facts with zero ambiguity
Models reward clarity. Every key fact — what you do, who you serve, where you operate, what makes you different, your pricing model — should be stated plainly in text, not buried in an image or implied. If a person skimming your homepage couldn't summarise your business in one sentence, a model can't either.
3. Add structured data (schema)
Schema markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ) gives assistants a machine-readable version of your facts. It dramatically improves the odds a model extracts your details correctly and trusts them. This is one of the fastest technical wins available.
4. Write citable, answer-shaped content
AI assistants quote passages that answer a question completely and stand on their own. Structure content as clear questions and direct, well-sourced answers. Lead with the answer, then support it. Cite data. The easier you make it to lift and attribute a passage, the more often you'll be the one quoted.
5. Seed the third-party sources models trust
ChatGPT doesn't only read your site — it reads the wider web. Consistent mentions across reputable directories, review platforms, industry roundups and press build the "multiple independent sources agree" signal that gives a model confidence to recommend you. Being included in a "best [service] in London" article can matter as much as your own page.
6. Keep everything fresh and consistent
Contradictions kill confidence. Your name, services, location and claims should match everywhere they appear. Outdated or conflicting information makes a model hedge — or pick someone else.
7. Monitor your share of AI answers
GEO isn't set-and-forget. Track how often and how prominently the assistants mention you over time, watch competitors, and keep feeding the sources that move the needle. Visibility compounds when you measure it.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT?
No — recommendations aren't paid placements. You earn them by being a clear, trusted, well-cited source. That's what GEO builds.
How long does it take?
Well-structured changes can surface within days to a few weeks as models re-crawl the web; durable visibility usually builds over two to three months.
Is this different from ranking on Google?
Yes. Google ranking is one input, but AI assistants weigh clarity, structure and third-party consensus differently. See what GEO is for the full comparison.
